Interfax TMT is carrying a story about new policies in China that will focus on copyright protections for content distributed over the Internet. That would of course include, music, games, and mobile  apps.

“We encourage innovative content produced by Internet users, but plagiarism and modification of others’ work without permission will be banned and punished,” Yan Xiaohong, deputy bureau chief of China’s Copyright Bureau, told domestic Web site People.com.cn on April 21.

China’s Internet growth defies global economic downturn

156265623_cecd0de950If China is suffering under the global economic downturn, you wouldn’t know it judging by the growth in the number of Chinese netizens. In Q1 2009, Chinese Internet users grew by 16.2 million, reaching a total of 316 million. This growth is on top of a stellar 2008 when China’s Internet users increased by an astounding 41%!

Over 90% of netizens are on high-speed (broadband) connections. This fresh data comes from Xi Guohua, Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Xi noted that; while the global financial crisis brought impact to the real economy, China’s Internet industry did not slow its development speed.”

The Vice Minister further revealed that during the past year, China’s e-commerce market scale was estimated at CNY3 trillion, a year-on-year increase of 41.7%; the scale of the online advertising market was about CNY12 billion, a year-on-year increase of 55.8%; and the scale of the online games market was between CNY19 billion and CNY20 billion, a year-on-year increase of about 50%. China Internet Population Tops 200 Million 中国互联网人口名列前茅200 百万

The number of Internet users in China soared past 200 million in 2007, a new report from the country’s quasi-government Internet overseer said Thursday.  China’s Internet population stood at 210 million at the end of last year, up 53 percent from the same time in 2006 when there were 137 million, the China Internet Network Information Centre said in its semi-annual report on Internet use here.  That figure puts China just 5 million users away from becoming the world’s largest wired nation — and with only about 16 percent of the population online. At its current growth rate, China will become the world’s top Internet market sometime in the next few months.
