Yesterday we learned that Apple acquired rights to a special iPhone ap to bring handwriting recognition to iPhone, including special Japanese character recognition. Today we learn that Apple has acquired rights to the “iPhone” name in Japan. A PR from Nagoya-based Aiphone explains that the relatively obscure Japanese company has been in talks with Apple since last summer over assigning Apple rights to use the “iPhone” trademark in Japan. The initial naming rights battle arose simply because the Japanese character rendering of ‘Aiphone’ and ‘iPhone’ are the same.
Aiphone now says they have “reached a friendly agreement with Apple” that allows both companies to use the Japanese version within Japan.
I’d say there is now fairly strong circumstantial evidence that gen 2.0 iPhone will make its way to Japan.
