UPDATE: April 1, 2008
“We are working to replenish iPhone supplies as quickly as we can,” Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said. “Our stores continue to receive shipments almost every day.”
Uh huh J
iPhones Sold out! Somethin’s up with iPhone inventory –
Is it excess demand or purposefully controlled supply?
iPhone in Asia has noticed a very recent and dramatic shortage of stock in iPhones. This is not simply at one or two store locations. It appears to be across the entire Apple distribution channel – storefronts and online store.
There’s some smoke here … the fire might be a new product (next gen) 3G iPhone announcement. Yet iPhone in Asia does not foresee a 3G iPhone launch before June (as late as Sept 1). Tightly controlled supply chain might also indicate that Apple is getting ready to announce carrier deals (SingTel, et. al.) in the next couple of weeks, and in concert, they need to reveal “next gen” iPhone plans. Such an announcement (new models coming) would effectively dampen demand for the current generation iPhone. Hence the tight supply chain reflecting Apple’s need/desire not to get caught with excess inventory. But that is just a SWAG and likely off-base.
The iPhone shortage could also be due to a recent surge in demand for iPhones. Hollywood is now fully on-board and the kids are seeing iPhones on American Idol and other popular TV shows. There is no doubt that iPhones are continuing to sell. Go into any Apple Store and ask. Yep, people are buying and loving their iPhones. Are we now hitting a critical mass in demand?
My guess is that the “shortage issue” is due to both supply and demand issues … iPhones are selling well and Apple is purposefully controlling the supply-chain in anticipation of a new product announcement. What I can’t quite figure is the timing issue. I still don’t believe we will see a new 3G iPhone model(s) in stores before June 1, and possibly as late as September 1.
